Photographed at the National Railway Museum, York, on 24 April 2007.
This LNWR express passenger locomotive was built at Crewe Works in 1892 for service on the north west main line.
During the 1895 "races" over the 540 miles from London to Aberdeen, Hardwicke took a 3 coach train the 141 miles from Crewe to Carlisle, including climbing Shap summit, in 120 minutes.
