The Class 08 diesel-electric shunter was designed as a replacement for the many and varied steam shunting locomotives that operated in the goods yards and stations across the United Kingdom. Approximately 1000 of these locomotives were built between 1953 and 1962 by British Railways at Darlington, Crewe, Derby, Horwich and Doncaster. This is the largest fleet of diesel locomotives ever built in the UK.
