Description

PKP Class BR232 Co-Co diesel-electric locomotive of either 2200 or 3000 kW photographed on 3 October 2015. This Class originated with production in Voroshilovgrad, which after the dismantling of the Soviet Union became Lugansk in the Ukraine. East Germany was by far the largest recipient of these locomotives, of which 709 were delivered between 1973 and 1982, as Class 132. After the reunification of Germany they were absorbed into Deutsche Bahn (DB) as Class 232. Eventually some were purchased by Poland, and there were said to be 57 examples in Poland in 2008. They are nicknamed ‘Ludmila’, after a popular Russian female name.
BR is an abbreviation of ‘Baureihe’, meaning ‘Class’.
