Description

Polish State Railways (PKP) locomotive photographed on 30 September 2015 while travelling to Wolsztyn, Poland, from Warsaw via Poznan.
The SM42 was the first heavy Bo-Bo diesel locomotive designed in Poland, and the most numerous. “SM” stands for diesel shunter. It was designed by the state Central Construction Bureau of Railway Stock Industry (CBKPTK) in Poznań, as the type 6D. Production was assigned to the Fablok Locomotive Factory in Chrzanów, where it was designated Ls800E (meaning an 800 HP diesel locomotive with electric transmission). The prototype was ready in December 1963. There were gradual improvements to the class, culminating in the single-control Ls800P variant with numbers above 2000.
