Photographed at the National Railway Museum, York, on 18 March 2017.
The noses of these two power cars (Eurostar 37-3308 and Shinkansen “bullet train” car 22-141) are framed here by a full scale replica section of the Euro Tunnel linking Great Britain and France. Note the headroom required to accommodate the overhead power cabling and pantograph.
The Japanese JR West line opened in 1964 and this power car was withdrawn from service in 2000 before being donated to the NRM. At a speed of 130 mph it took just over 3 hours to travel the 320 miles between Tokyo and Osaka, as part of a 16 car rake.
