Photographed on 29 September 2014 when our Coast Starlight express train made a stop here, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Franscisco. Chinese labour gangs, local to San Luis Obispo, under the direction of Ah Louis and others, were hired out to construct roads and the Pacific Coast Railway. The Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in San Luis Obispo in 1894, and this, combined with a local gold discovery, brought prosperity to the area.
This Iron Road Pioneers statue (sculpted by Elizabeth MacQueen) to honour Chinese railroad workers and other Chinese immigrants to San Luis Obispo County, was dedicated on 18 January 2003.
