These are known as the Yellow Tubs. They were built in the 1970's and were used for moving clay out of mines around Newton Abbot. They descended by gravity and hauled back by a steel wire attached to an electric motor.
This means of getting the clay up was still in use when I worked in the industry 20 years ago.
