Co-Co locomotive powered by a 3000 hp (2240 kW) EMD 645E3 16-cylinder turbocharged 2-stroke Vee engine and alternator supplying current through silicon rectifiers to 6 nose-suspended traction motors. Tractive effort: 83, 100 lb (370 kN), max. speed 65 mph (105 km/h). SD = Special Duty. 645 is the cylinder volume, 645 cu. in. The SD40 version was introduced in 1965, with the "dash 2" range coming in 1972. The Burlington Northern Railroad had about 900 of these locomotives, a quarter of its total locomotive stock.
